Murray Patchell CA PP

TK14 Advisor
I am a Chartered Accountant and have been a member of the NZ Institute if Chartered Accountants since 1985. For 18 years I worked for NZ Guardian Trust (and its predecessor NZI Trust) and gained invaluable experience throughout the Waikato, Manawatu and Bay of Plenty in managing Trusts and deceased estates. I obtained experience with managing investment portfolios, property management, farms and forestry. My work was diverse and covered most business sectors. Often it involved coming in cold to a business of a recently deceased person and getting everything organised for the business to continue.

I finished my time with the Trust company as Manager of the Rotorua Branch in July 1995 when I took the opportunity to move into public practice accountancy, joining with Ian Hulton in the partnership of Hulton Patchell Ltd that followed on from the earlier Hinton and Hulton Partnership. Our practice focused on Maori Land blocks and Incorporations in the Waiariki District. Not only did we provide advisory work to our clients but we provided active asset management in addition to accounting, tax and reporting requirements.

One of my key clients was Pukeroa Oruawhata Trust with the development of the Rotorua Central Shopping Centre from bare land to a $250m asset with 100% Debt funding for new developments. I was instrumental in securing the buy back of forest assets for Rotoma No1 Inc, Rotoiti 3v3 Trust and Taheke Paengaroa Trust, and lease renegotiations for Whangamoa Trust (lakeside leases) for Te Whaiti Nui A Toi Trust (Forestry Lease).

I have been Secretary and Accountant for over 20 years for The Ngati Whakaue Education Endowment (Property leases and grants distribution), Kokako Trust (Dairy farms) and Ngatimanawa Incorporation (Dairy Farm). I am also Secretary/Accountant for the Parekarangi A4 Trust (Dairy Farm) in Rotorua and Ngati Rongomai Iwi Trust and Charitable Trusts. In 2013 I became Secretary/Accountant for Te Tumu Kaituna 14 Trust when Ian Hulton retired.

In 2013 I also initiated the merger of my practice with Deloitte. I retired as a partner of Deloitte in 2016 and since then I have been providing secretarial, advisory and management services through my own company Karamea Professional Services Ltd.

In addition I have worked with Iwi Settlement entities and assisted their establishment and financial management through their process to settlement and operating on their own account.

I have been involved with many community activities and have been a  member and President of the Rotorua Rotary Club as well as Assistant District Governor. For 12 Years I was a Trustee of the Geyser Community Foundation which co-ordinates charitable giving in our community. I am also a Director on One Foundation that distributes over $12m p.a. to charities and sporting groups nationwide.

Although I was born in Hamilton my father owned a farm in Waikite Valley before WW2 and grandfather was active in business in the Rotorua area. My Grandmother lived at Holdens Bay until her passing at aged 94.

My wife Helen and I have been happily married for 42 years. Our two children and two Grandchildren live in Perth where we regularly visit.

I have had the privilege of working with and learning from many well respected Kaumatua, Trustees, Owners and advisers through a period of significant growth in the Maori Sector. It is an honour to be accepted to provide services to the sector and my personal commitment has been to grow and mentor young Maori into the accounting and management profession which I have done through Hulton Patchell, Deloitte and now through Karamea Professional Services.

My commitment is to continue providing services to the highest professional standard and to secure superior outcomes for my clients with whatever their goals may be.
